- Confessions of a Former Lane Bryant Employee: What I Learned From Selling Clothes to Other Fat Women This post may have inspired me to rant on Twitter about how posts like these are really great but only to a limited extent: they silence and marginalize people who are too large to walk into a shop and order clothing. This is actually a huge problem within fat acceptance that the community is unwilling to address–the last time I brought the issue up, in 2010, I was told that if I wanted people to be more inclusive of the superdeathfats that I needed to speak up more. Which I thought was pretty fucking awesome. Anyhow, there’s this whole fat acceptance thing around finding cute clothes and the places to find cute clothes and there are posts about it and with very few exceptions, the places that sell stylish fat clothing top out at a size 24 or 26. And this is rarely noted in the posts so it’s like being punched in the face repeatedly if you consistently wear a size larger than a 26.

- Women in SFF Panels and World Fantasy Programming World Fantasy, really? REALLY? Presumably the programming committee hasn’t been living under a rock for the last year and this is what they come up with? And does anyone have a link to the WFC rules that limit the amount of programming non-GOH members can be on (per this)? I see nothing on the website about this–and the requirements are pretty clearly laid out. I get that they want a variety of people on the program but having “Women in Fantasy” and “Online Book Reviews are Dragging the Rest of Us Down” panels seems a bit, er, well. And I do have a vested interest since I’ll be attending in 2014.

Finally, I awoke this morning to news that one of my favorite poets, Seamus Heaney, had died. Here’s my favorite poem by him from his 1975 collection, North.
Punishment
I can feel the tug
of the halter at the nape
of her neck, the wind
on her naked front.
It blows her nipples
to amber beads,
it shakes the frail rigging
of her ribs.
I can see her drowned
body in the bog,
the weighing stone,
the floating rods and boughs.
Under which at first
she was a barked sapling
that is dug up
oak-bone, brain-firkin:
her shaved head
like a stubble of black corn,
her blindfold a soiled bandage,
her noose a ring
to store
the memories of love.
Little adulteress,
before they punished you
you were flaxen-haired,
undernourished, and your
tar-black face was beautiful.
My poor scapegoat,
I almost love you
but would have cast, I know,
the stones of silence.
I am the artful voyeuur
of your brain’s exposed
and darkened combs,
your muscles’ webbing
and all your numbered bones:
I who have stood dumb
when your betraying sisters,
cauled in tar,
wept by the railings,
who would connive
in civilized outrage
yet understand the exact
and tribal, intimate revenge.
